Name: Rowan
Age: 26
Universe: Werewolf: the Forsaken ‘verse in the World of Darkness gameline. Generally, it’s a darker reflection of our world where the monster under the bed is real. A really good summary of the W:tF line is here at the TVTropes page

Personality: Rowan is difficult to pin down for most people, because his demeanor is negative and unfriendly. Add that to the fact he is normally found in situations where things are unsettling, weird, and violent, it is easy to dismiss him and his friends as freaks or a gang that causes all the bad things to happen.

By human standards, Rowan is difficult to deal with. He has little patience for coddling or spoiling, little use for kindness, and a giant dose of put on your big boy/girl pants and deal with the shit life throws at you without whining about it. Life is tough, and people have to grow tough in order to survive it. Much of this comes from his childhood – it’s easy to blame it on Uratha society and mentality, but in truth it came from his years as being shunted from one foster family to the next. Being an Uratha only solidified his viewpoint on the world.

However, in comparison to many of his fellow packmates, Rowan is one of softest. He is more apt to listen before he bites and is fully willing to take a mentorship role among his younger packmates. He will often take the more merciful side of a debate and allow the other Elodoth of his pack, Juniper, to take the harsher route and explore the implications of both sides of the argument. He has a special soft spot for orphans; his totem’s ban is regarding the protection of children, and he makes an effort to search out orphans and foster children. He won’t coddle them, of course, but he will do what he can to teach them to survive.

PB: Aiba Masaki

Physical description: Rowan looks like he’s always in need of a few good sandwiches and a giant bowl of ice cream. His features, already strong, are emphasized by his diet of I-forgot-to-eat-again-it’s-not-really-that-important. His hair is his best asset, much as he doesn’t worry about it more than trimming it when it starts to get unmanageable.

He dresses casually, in utilitarian jeans and dark shirts or hoodies. Most are stained or torn in some way, as he doesn’t go in for the soft life and has no need for clothes that can’t survive a trip through the sewers or throwing something through a door. Like most Bone Shadows, he collects trinkets that could be used against spirits in a pinch. Unlike most Bone Shadows, he keeps his in an old, worn messenger bag that might have once been blue but was now gray. He is rarely seen without it; only on long trips in Urhan (wolf) form will have him wearing his trinkets instead of carrying them.

Despite the Uratha’s healing abilities, Rowan is still has a number of scars from his various fights. Among the more important ones are a set of claw marks across his abdomen (from the bear spirit that would become his totem after the battle) and bite mark across his shoulder from Juniper’s attempt to put him down in the midst of a Death Rage. He also has an elaborate tattoo on his back, a yggdrasil-inspired double tree, the top a white silhouette of the juniper tree with blue accents and the bottom a black silhouette of a rowan tree with red accents, with a half moon connecting the two trees.

In wolf form, he is a lean black wolf that is otherwise not notably unique or different.

Background: Rowan was born Elias Lin, an unwanted child with behavioral problems that was shunted from one family to the next in the foster system. Severe temper tantrums that lead to broody sullenness during his teenage years made his foster parents wary of him and he never stayed anywhere for more than a year before he was moved to a new house. It might have bothered him, but he had long ago gotten used to disappointments in potential families and the friends he managed to find among his schoolmates were easily forgotten once they were out of sight.

Things started to change around his sixteenth birthday, a few months after being sent to a new foster family that promptly ignored him. First he made a friend, probably the first he had made in his entire life. Elinor, despite coming from a large family that loved her and tolerated her moodiness and her occasional bouts of rage and prosperity for throwing things when she was angry, understood him in a way no one had before. She saw the weird things that flitted through the edges of their vision, and they started to investigate some of the things on their own.

Then things started to get really weird. He would wake up, miles away in a forest with no memory how he got there and a bite mark on his leg that looked half healed. He saw more dog footprints in the soft dirt around his foster parents’ house, and he knew full well they detested animals. Elinor whispered that there were wolves in the trees outside her house, and he wondered if they were the cause of the footprints outside of his.

On the night of the half moon, all the weirdness culminated into a final show where he started to mutate. One minute he was normal, and the next he was half wolf and destroying the things in his room. He panicked and ran to the forest, now a full wolf and running towards something he didn’t know. The something turned out to be a white wolf in a clearing with a number of other wolves and some humans, waiting for him.

As it turned out, he was an Uratha. Technically a werewolf, although no self-respecting Uratha (along with most that didn’t respect themselves) would never refer to themselves as that. An Uratha was half of the spirit world and half of the material realm, the Uratha gathered in the clearing explained to him and Elinor (the white wolf to his black wolf, the white half of the moon to the black). They had been watching them for the past month, waiting for them to undergo their First Change. Additionally, they informed Rowan that his mother had been an Uratha herself, but died shortly after giving birth to him and his twin brother. That he had a family (and a twin brother!) caused a greater amount of surprise and stress for him than being a half spirit wolf monster thing, because at least that sort of went to explain what was going on.

Elias decided to join the Bone Shadow tribe, the Hirathra Hissu, which were the most determined to go the furthest to figure out what was going on and for more information. They granted him a task to prove himself worthy: he had to go get five pieces of information he did not know from the ghost of his twin brother. Elias hadn’t even known his twin brother was a ghost, and leapt at the opportunity to have some connection with a family he didn’t know.

His twin brother was named Rowan, who had been happily adopted and still mourned by his parents. Elias’ appearance out of nowhere shocked his brother’s parents, but they were polite enough to talk to the peculiar young man who looked so much like their son. Rowan was a clever boy, he found out, with a love for wilderness. On a typical camping trip, he fell and broke his neck. Elias went to the scene of the death and found the ghost of his brother, who was not much more than a vague outline of a person that stayed around the area of his death and wandered the forest.

Elias only managed to learn two things from his brother for sure, with a strong sense that Rowan did not just fall into the ravine that broke his neck. But they were unable to communicate beyond pointing and following, and so he didn’t know what had happened specifically. He made it a goal to find out, and decided to adopt Rowan’s name for his own. Elias was worthless and Rowan died before reaching his potential.

He returned, failed, but was accepted into the Bone Shadow tribe regardless because the point was to discover how to do so and how difficult it was, not to succeed the first try. Elinor, who had decided to join the Bone Shadows as well, returned with the name Juniper for reasons she refused to tell him, but they both took it for a sign that they had named themselves for trees.

It’s been roughly ten years since he’s had his First Change, and everything that’s happened since tends to mush together in a rush of sensory memory. He remembers the year it took to find out who killed his brother and his revenge for it, the battle against the Bear spirit that would be their Totem (that nearly killed him), one of the few times he went into a Death Rage that wasn’t in battle and having to be taken down by the rest of his pack…

The memories that stick are not the good ones, most of the time.

Skills: He is a werewolf an Uratha, and has the ability to switch through five forms of varying wolfness/monsterness, access to magic, ability to access the spirit world and talk/fight with spirits, and superior healing abilities. On ship, this translates to a high metabolism, some heightened healing ability, and the ability to shift one of his features at a time into something vaguely wolfish.

Other skills include hunting, wilderness survival, investigation, knife-wielding, able to act as a mediator and judge, pissing people off, working as part of a group
